SYNOPSIS
AI FOR LAYPERSONS & LAY ENGINEERS: AI EXPLAINED SIMPLY — Even If You’d Rather Lie Down
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere — but most explanations are filled with equations, jargon, or textbook theory. This session takes a refreshing approach: AI explained simply, logically, and practically for both laypersons and “lay engineers” (engineers outside the AI domain).
Whether you’re a civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or management professional — or you’re simply AI-curious — this webinar breaks down AI into concepts that anyone can understand. No mathematics, no coding, no algorithms. Just real-world logic and examples.
Participants will learn how AI actually works, why most AI projects fail, and why data structure and data sanitation are far more important than AI models themselves ( unless your job is to create new models). Using engineering analogies, a small test case, and a playful teaching style, this session aims to demystify AI and empower attendees to prepare their organisations for AI adoption without hype.
By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
- Understand AI using everyday logic
- Identify why AI succeeds or fails in real-world settings
- Recognise the importance of clean, structured data
- Make informed, practical decisions on AI readiness
Ideal for engineers, managers, SME leaders, students, and those so bombarded by the AI wave that they’ve decided: ‘Not lying down anymore — time to understand this finally.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Dr. Leong Yeng Weng
PhD in Human-Computer Interface & Triboacoustics, MEE in Lightning Prediction (radiosonde & artificial Intelligence)
BEEE in Microcontroller & Semiconductor
Ir. Dr. Leong Yeng Weng is a Professional Engineer (Electronics) with 20 years of combined industrial, academic, R&D, leadership, and applied AI experience. He began his career in 2005 as a Product Engineer at Hitachi Electronic Products (M) Sdn. Bhd., focusing on electronics manufacturing, reliability testing, and development. He later served as a lecturer at INTI International University College and subsequently Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), where he became Senior Lecturer until 2024, teaching engineering subjects, supervising research, and leading multiple innovation initiatives. During his academic tenure, he also contributed significantly to TVET development, serving as Head Coordinator for TVET and APEL from 2021–2023 and earlier as Head of Marketing for the Faculty from 2015–2017.
Dr. Leong holds a PhD from Kanazawa University, Japan (passed with no corrections), specialising in Human–Computer Interface, sensors, triboacoustics, and machine learning. He also holds a Master of Electrical Engineering from UNITEN, specialising in lightning prediction using radiosonde data and artificial intelligence, forming the early foundation of his AI expertise and the filing of his first patent. His applied AI engineering portfolio includes major national-level projects such as TNB’s real-time lightning-tracking system. He is the inventor of several granted patents, including A Method of Predicting Cloud-to-Ground Lightning and A System and Method for Semi-Online Examination and Invigilation.
He has received multiple recognitions, including the 20th AROB Young Author Award and several MTE COVID-19 Special Edition innovation awards. In addition to technical work, he has held leadership roles within both Malaysian and international technology organisations. He also currently serves as a Committee Member of the IEM Negeri Sembilan Branch (2025/2026).
With contributions published and award-winning innovations, he now focuses on SME digitalisation and AI readiness through Infoleum, a structured data and compliance platform developed under Jidoka Integratech Services.
